Ava McGown, solitary member of the Eagle girls’ cross country team, punched her ticket to the state meet at a chilly district competition last Thursday in Cambridge. Following a season of consistent medaling, only missing the top 15 at one meet, her hard work and dedication to the sport paid off. McGown finished in fourth place at the most recent race, clocking a time of 22:18 against 51 competitors. She will run in the state competition this Friday for the second time in her career.
The boys’ team fell a little short of qualifying for the state meet, but finished the season strong in a very competitive field of 59 runners. Cooper Franzen placed 23rd with a 19:53, and Aidan Mullen followed in 30th with a 20:24, a career best for him. Levi Jurjens came back from a leg injury to log a 22:50 for 53rd, and Jacob Shaner crossed the line right behind him in 54th with a 22:54. The boys’ team garnered 10th place overall.
Ava McGown will represent the Eagles at the NSAA Cross Country Championships at Kearney Country Club on Oct. 23. Good luck at State, Ava!
