Florists in Gothenburg and across the nation randomly surprised people Oct. 24 with the gift of a fresh flower — make that two fresh flowers — and asked the recipient to “petal it forward” by giving one to someone else.
“The idea is just to brighten someone’s day, to give something away without expecting anything in return,” said Dee Miller, owner of Dee’s Floral in Gothenburg.
Dee’s Floral and Ribbons & Roses of Gothenburg took part in the annual Petal it Forward campaign established five years ago by the Society of American Florists. The organization says more than 400 cities in all 50 states participated in this year’s flower giveaway.
Denise Romatzke has been in the floral business in Gothenburg for the past 26 years and said this is the second year Ribbons & Roses has participated in the Petal it Forward campaign.
“It’s just a good feeling to be able to do this, just to do something to be kind and make somebody’s day. That’s what it’s all about,” said Romatzke.
She gave away 122 flowers.
