According to reports from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, the Gothenburg Police Department responded to the scene of a non-injury accident during the very early morning hours of Sunday, March 7 in the vicinity of 16th Street and Avenue C. Upon arrival the officer found the driver, Randy Olson of Gothenburg, behind the wheel of a vehicle which had hit a parked vehicle. The officer dispatched the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office for assistance with the investigation as alcohol was suspected as a factor in the accident.

Olson was booked into the Dawson County Jail in Lexington at that time for suspicion of driving under the influence. He was later released on bond.

“The Chief of Police has been placed on suspension without pay pending the outcome of the investigation and determination of his case filed in Dawson County Court. Matt Langley is acting as interim Chief until further notice,” stated Gothenburg City Administrator Gary Greer. “Being a personnel matter, no other information is available at this time.”

According to the Nebraska State Attorney General’s Office who is handling the case, no charges have been formally filed against Olson at this time. The investigation is ongoing.
