For the second consecutive year, Horizon Ag in Gothenburg hosted a competition for chili connaisseurs. This year’s chili cook-off was held on Saturday, March 7.

It was a busy weekend at Horizon Ag, as the day before the business hosted an open house, featuring vendors, technology demonstrations and a smoked brisket lunch. The open house provides farmers with an opportunity to see the latest innovations in the industry, as well as take advantage of special discounted offers from dealers such as Valley, AgSense, Brandt and Sioux.

For the second year, the chili cook-off was organized by Wyatt Meester of Cozad. “I like to cook and just thought this sounded like a fun idea,” said Meester.

A panel of three “expert” chili judges selected their top three favorites, while the public also got an opportunity to choose a favorite. Following the judging doors were opened to the public at 5 p.m., and for $7 people were invited to eat all the chili they wanted. Proceeds from the cook-off are being used to help restock the local food pantry.

Results of the competition were:

People’s Choice - Ed Claflin; Judges Choices, 1st place - Dave Meyer; 2nd place - Kali and Andrea Meester; 3rd place - Cody Eggleston, manager of Horizon Ag.
