A slow-speed chase on Interstate 80 came to an end Tuesday near Gothenburg when State Patrol troopers took a man into custody.

A trooper saw a Chevrolet Suburban driving eastbound at about 30 mph near mile marker 190 and attempted a traffic stop, NSP said in a news release.

“The vehicle stopped momentarily, but then continued driving at around 30 to 35 miles per hour,” NSP said in the release. “Troopers pursued the vehicle, attempting to get the driver to stop or exit I-80. As the vehicle continued eastbound, troopers successfully deployed spike strips near mile marker 207. A trooper was then able to perform a tactical vehicle intervention to bring the Suburban to a stop in the median.”

After taking the man in custody, NSP said the driver was possibly “experiencing a mental episode.” He was taken into emergency protective custody.

Interstate 80 was closed in both directions for about 45 minutes, detouring trucks and travelers onto U.S. 30. That caused a traffic backup throughout Gothenburg until the interstate reopened to traffic.
