Grass Fire

Flames are being fanned by strong winds as area fire fighters work to get the blaze under control.

The Gothenburg Volunteer Fire Department have joined firefighters from communities all across the area Thursday afternoon to battle a grass fire 15 miles north of Gothenburg. The fire is located just west of Highway 47, and north of Road 792.

Strong winds from the north are hampering efforts to bring the fire under control, and as of 3:30 p.m. Thursday, departments from the region continue to be called in for mutual aid.

Anyone traveling in that area is urged to be cautious of emergency vehicles and turn your headlights on for safety, as a thick cloud of smoke is blanketing the area.

The Gothenburg Leader will have more details on this breaking story as they become available.

UPDATE: The fire was contained as of 8 p.m. March 13 and required more than 15 area fire departments to assist. Complete story in the March 19 issue of the Gothenburg Leader.
