For the second year, families in Gothenburg will be provided with free meals over the summer. The USDA recently announced that the waivers established in response to the Covid-19 pandemic will remain in effect through the 2021 school year or until the expiration of the federally declared health emergency – whichever is earlier. “That is great news for Gothenburg Public Schools and for all of our students and families because it means that free meals (one breakfast and one lunch) will be offered to all students, regardless of income, through the 2021-2022 school year,” said GPS Food Service Director Joni Jacobsen.
In addition, Gothenburg Public Schools will be offering FREE meals this summer. These meals will be distributed on Wednesdays beginning June 9 and be available through July 29 for all those who have signed up.
Jacobsen said that distribution of these meals will look a little different this year. Each meal box will include an entire week’s (7 days) worth of meals for all children in the home that are 18 years of age or younger. “Because there will be frozen food included in the boxes, please plan accordingly. White milk will be offered in gallon jugs. If you choose not to take milk, please let us know ahead of time,” Jacobsen said.
All meals will need to be picked up at the community building, 1322 Avenue I outside of the cafeteria. There will be no delivery available this summer. Pick up is between 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Please enter at the south entrance to the parking lot, and follow the cones to the north.
“Because we are preparing meals for your family for an entire week, please let us know in advance if you will not be picking up your meal box,” Jacobsen shared. “We do not want to let anything go to waste and this will help us to plan accordingly.”
Last year Gothenburg school served more than 71,860 meals from mid-March until the end of July. To sign up for the summer meal program please email Joni at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 308-537-3651 ext. 6127.
