There is something unique about Halloween 2020 - we are all already accustomed to wearing masks! And in line with social distancing protocols, the Gothenburg community has pulled together in true fashion to provide several fun and safe candy-collecting opportunities for the kids.
Hilltop Estates will kick off the party on Friday, Oct. 30 from 4 - 4:30 p.m. Children in costumes are asked to form a parade starting in the front parking lot and making their way around the outside of the building for the residents inside to see. Of course, candy will be given to the costumed kiddos - and it’s a great way to allow the residents to still feel connected.
From there the children are encouraged to make their way downtown for the annual Munchkin Masquerade, being held from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. More than 30 businesses have signed up to participate in the decades-old tradition in Gothenburg. This year organizers, with the help of the City, are taking extra safety precautions. Part of the streets in the downtown area will be closed to traffic during the Masquerade to allow both trick-or-treaters and the treat-givers the room to socially distance during the event.
Lake Avenue from Highway 30 to 11th Street, 10th Street from Avenue F to Avenue D and 9th Street from Avenue F to Lake Avenue will be barricaded during that time. Businesses will be setting up their stations to greet the children closer to the curb in front of their business, allowing the kids to utilize the street to make their way from station to station. Everyone is asked to park outside of the blocked area during that hour.
More candy is in store on Halloween day, with the YMCA at Gothenburg Health hosting their Spooktacular Extravaganza from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Y. Then from 3 - 6 p.m. all are invited to Trunk-or-Treat at The Crossing Fellowship, located on Highway 30 (formerly Walker’s Steakhouse). Along with lots of treats, the event will also feature a bounce house, face painting, hot cider, and coffee for mom and dad.
To get even more in the true spirit of Halloween, the Ristine family is once again hosting their spooky event. The 9th Annual Haunted Pumpkin Drive-thru will take place from 7 p.m. till midnight on Saturday, Oct. 31, and from 7 - 10 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1. Each year the family gets together to carve jack-o-lanterns and design displays for the drive-thru. There is no charge for the family-friendly event. Those driving through are asked to turn off their headlights and stay in their vehicle, unless you stop to take a selfie with Mr. Eleskin! The drive-thru is located at Ristine farm east of Gothenburg, 41510 Road 767.
In these times of Covid uncertainty and caution, our community has once again made its youngest residents a top priority by keeping them safe and still allowing them to enjoy this special time. After all, that’s the “Gothenburg Way”.
