On Jan. 20, the Gothenburg Swede girls varsity wrestling team participated in competition during the Lexington-John Higgins Invite. The competition featured wrestling teams from 20 different schools from across the region. This level of competition can be intimidating for anyone, but the Swede girls took to the mats and gave it their absolute best.

While the Swede girls team may lack the number of wrestlers that some other teams may have, what they have in droves is strength and heart - a desire to compete at their peak ability and a desire to win.

Coach Tim Negley previously had commented on this strength when he said, “The girls team has also had a fair amount of success even though there are only four girls on the team. All four of them have found success at one point of time or another throughout the season with the highlight being Abby Negley, as she has placed 3rd or higher at every tournament this year with one championship and beating several ranked wrestlers along the way.”

All four girls competed against some of the best wrestlers the region has and performed excellently. The girls have a few days to rest and train as they prepare for Amherst on Jan. 28.
