Meints

Gothenburg’s Junior and Senior Melons baseball teams have been hard at work on the diamond, each picking up wins at home and on the road as they get into the heart of their respective seasons.

June 2 saw the Melons hosting Broken Bow and falling behind early in the game. Bow scored four runs in the first inning and the Junior Melons didn’t have an answer, dropping the contest 12-3.

The Senior Melons saw the same trouble with Bow, falling behind in the third inning when the visitor put seven runs on the board. Maddox Rickertsen took the loss on the mound in the 13-0 contest.

The Melons took to the road on June 3 to take on McCook. Bennett Geiken singled in a run in the first inning and the Melons kept things rolling en route to a 6-2 win. Bennett Geiken got the win on the mound, allowing no hits and two runs over two and two-thirds innings of work. He struck out three.

The seniors had a hard time getting the bats warmed up at McCook, and fell in the road contest 10-2. Tate Gurcillo and Maddox Rickertsen each had a hit and Gurcillo pitched five innings, allowing two hits and two runs while striking out 13 and walking one.

The Melons hit the road again on June 6 to take on Alma.

The juniors’ bats were hot from the get-go, putting up four runs in the first inning and four more in the third. Then in the fourth inning, the Melons exploded for nine runs to put the game away 17-2.

Wes Geiken pitched five innings, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out four.

The seniors also picked up a win on the road at Alma, nabbing the 5-3 win in eight innings.

Gothenburg got on the board in the second inning when Connor McCoy drove in two runs on a single.

Alma answered back in the fourth inning and that’s where the score stayed until the top of the eighth when Maddox Rickertsen singled on a fly ball to right field.

Riley Baker followed with a double to right, scoring Rickertsen. Baker scored on an error by the third baseman.

Baker earned the victory on the mound, throwing a complete game. He allowed three runs on 11 hits and struck out six while walking one.

The Melons are in action at home June 11 against Imperial. The Junior Melons play at 5:30 p.m. and the Seniors play at 8 p.m. at the Gothenburg American Legion Baseball Field on Avenue I.
