The Nebraska One Box Rock Crushers shotgun team traveled to San Antonio, Texas to compete in the USA Youth Education in Shooting Sports Junior Clay Target National Championships.

Two members of the Gothenburg Trap Team, Zach Smith and Kellin Nelson were a part of that team and competed well on the national stage.

The top five scores from each team for 100 target events in American Skeet, American Trap, Sporting Clays and Super Sporting are combined to determine the top all-around shooting teams.

The Rock Crushers posted a score of 1,832, which was 100 targets more than the second place team.

American Skeet was the first competition on the field with Smith hitting 98/100 targets. That score placed him at the top of the individual skeet standings, where he placed third.

As a team, the Rock Crushers posted a team skeet score of 488/500 in the American Skeet Competition, only missing 12 targets and earning them first place.

Nelson competed on the junior varsity team in the American Skeet contest that took top honors.

The achievement didn’t stop there for either of the shooters.

Smith finished third in the senior mens’ division of Super Sporting as well as second place as a part of a mixed squad.

Smith also took second place in the Sporting Clay senior mens’ division.

Nelson competed on the intermediate squad that took home championship medals in Sporting Clay as well as the gold in the squad competition in that same event.

In the American Trap event, Smith competed on a mixed squad that took championship honors and earned the first place medal as the High All-Around shooter, taking 373/400 clays following a shoot-off against Gregory Stewart from Washington.

Smith beat 187 other shooters to win that honor.

Nelson took fifth place in the Intermediate all-around.

In the International Skeet Senior Mens’ division, the Rock Crushers were on the medal stand again with Sach Smith taking silver.

The tournament also featured a State vs. State competition in which Smith competed with other team members, claiming the Championship medal in that event as well.
