Gothenburg’s Senior Melons are headed into tournament action, beginning July 23 at Minden when they take on McCook at 11 a.m. at Ollie Bjorklund Field.
The double elimination tournament also includes Minden, St. Paul, Doniphan-Trumbull, Holdrege, Cozad and Broken Bow.
Melons coach Jory Flesch said that he felt good about his team heading into the tournament.
“I think the seniors are ready to go,” he said.
Flesch said that a number of players who also played for the junior Melons will be joining the seniors in the tournament.
“The juniors moving up have played with us all year long,” he said. “They had great success with their area tournament and that should carry over into this weekend.”
Flesch said that his team will be successful in the tournament and indicated that a key to that success would be to stay sharp on both sides of the plate.
“The biggest hurdle will be to limit the errors in all aspects of the game,” he said. “I believe we can hit, field and pitch with any team in the tourney if we stay mentally tough.”
Gothenburg’s game against McCook will be the first of the 2021 Area B-6 Senior American Legion Baseball Tournament. Cost of admission is $5 for adults, $3 for students. Veterans receive free admittance.
