HISTORICAL MEMORIES

  • Work is underway at Lafayette Park on additional improvements. A new well has been installed, a new building is under construction, and charges are being made in the pavilion. Dr. Birkofer, chairman of the Park Committee, reported the erection of a bunk house and kitchen at Lafayette Park, the enclosing and screening of the pavilion and the grading with the cooperation of the Gothenburg Light & Power Co. of the road west and north of the lake. The pavilion was constructed in 1923.

    1931 – Henry Williams was worrying about grasshoppers which were too plentiful at the 96 Ranch south of town. His men, with two dozers, piled up dead grasshoppers estimated at 75 bushels in two and one-half days.

    1931 – The work of taking down and hanging the big sign at Lafayette Park was done after hours by the men from the Light & Power Company as well as some from the Telephone Company.

    1941 – New signs at the Dixie Café and Phil Gaudreault’s café were of the new type – big block letters with neon tubing behind them.
