Gothenburg High School opened the 2026 football season on Aug. 27 in a special evening being referred to as “Throwback Thursday”. The football and volleyball teams played back-to-back as they hosted Cozad, reminiscent of an earlier time when both games were traditionally played on the same night. This football game, however, became special for a different reason.
With a looming threat of severe weather as the teams took the field for the 7 p.m. kickoff, everyone hoped either the storms would miss Gothenburg, or they might be able to get the game in before anything hit. That was not the case. Just minutes into the second half, with the Swedes carrying a 14-0 lead, the sirens began sounding in Gothenburg, forcing everyone to seek shelter.
