The Gothenburg Junior Melons took the field for the area tournament this past weekend in Minden, where they faced Broken Bow, Minden, and Holdrege.
The Melons found success early versus Broken Bow on Friday, July 10, bringing in 8 runs in the first inning off 5 combined hits from Callen Johnson, Jaxon Earll, and Evan Geiser. That resulted in an inevitable 5th inning run-rule. Gunnar Thompson took off on a balk steal to score Andrew Salomon, bringing the final score to 9-1.
The Melons then went to battle with a hungry Minden team on Saturday, July 12, who dropped their first game of the tournament to Valparaiso.
