The Gothenburg cross country team began its highly anticipated 2026 season on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Minden. In the field of nine teams on the men’s side and eight in the women’s division, both Swedes’ teams finished third in the overall team standings on the day.

It was another hot, busy week for the Lady Swede softball team. On Tuesday, Sept. 1, the Swedes hosted one of their two home games of the season, meeting the Ord Chanticleers in a varsity-only match.

After beginning their 2026 campaign at home in a memorable game disrupted by storm sirens, the Gothenburg football team had their first road game last Friday night when they traveled to Hershey to take on the Panthers. The Swedes improved their record to 2-0 in a low-scoring game that ended 16-6.

Gothenburg High School opened the 2026 football season on Aug. 27 in a special evening being referred to as “Throwback Thursday”. The football and volleyball teams played back-to-back as they hosted Cozad, reminiscent of an earlier time when both games were traditionally played on the same night.

The Gothenburg Swede softball team has started its season in a fast and furious fashion, playing eight games in nine days. The girls started their season on Thursday, Aug. 20, in McCook, taking on the Class B Bison.The first inning started strong for the Swedes.
