You Never Know

As the saying goes, “Be kind. You never know what someone is going through.”

A young colleague shocks me with the confession she has had a stroke and now carries the load of many doctors’ appointments as she tries to figure out why. A close friend I just texted last week, I am surprised to learn, spent several days in the hospital. The smiling cashier secretly worries that her son hasn’t come home.

I feel the heaviness of carrying these burdens with people in my life. Once I know, I can’t unknow, but I’m not always sure what to do with what I know.
