The Facts Behind My Favorite Candy...Licorice

I grew up eating Snickers, Butterfingers, and Baby Ruth’s, but my favorite of all candies was licorice.

I would fantasize about growing up, becoming a multi-millionaire, and buying a licorice factory. I liked both the historic black licorice and the red variety that was first produced by Red Vines about the same time I was born.

When I was young, the cost to go to a movie was 25 cents. Just down the street from the theater was a candy store. For 10 cents I could get a package of 20 red Twizzlers. I’d slip them into my pocket to hide them because the theater had a policy that you couldn’t bring your own popcorn, pop, or candy into the movie, but the theater didn’t sell licorice.
