As children return to the classrooms of Gothenburg Public Schools this week, they are among the estimated 54.4 million students aged 3 years and older enrolled in K-12 across the United States. And the nation’s 5.9 million teachers are also returning to the classroom to educate them.
Those are the latest educational statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau. Of those 5.9 million teachers, nearly 57% are elementary or middle school teachers and more than 78% are female. Another interesting fact of note is that almost half (49.3%) of 3- to 4-year-olds are enrolled in preschool.
