The question I received was, “Does moss grow anywhere else besides the north side of a tree?” The quick answer is yes. Moss is a non-vascular plant.
What that means is that it doesn’t have any specialized tubes to carry food and water. Because of that, moss and their cousins, the liverworts, are not very big and they have to live where there is plenty of water and not too much sunlight to dry them out. In the northern hemisphere that can mean on the north side of a tree. In the southern hemisphere it would be the south side of the tree. However, if you are in a damp shady forest, moss can grow all around the tree, on the ground, pretty much everywhere.
