Proposed School Budget Draws Public Questions

Prior to the call to order of the Sept. 14 regular meeting of the Gothenburg Board of Education, a question-and-answer session was held with three board members, Superintendent Dr. Allison Jonas, and Jr High/Sr High Principal Seth Ryker present. A handful of local residents were also in the room with questions pertaining to the school budget and proposed tax request.

When it comes to school district tax and levy requests, property taxes are always at the heart of the issue, as that is the primary source of revenue for Nebraska public schools. While school districts have no control over the property tax itself, they do set how much of that tax will go to school funding. And that process can become confusing, which is why Dr. Jonas arranged for a Q& A session with the public last week.
